This evening, I had the great pleasure of attending the annual dinner of the ICE NI Region, at the Europa Hotel in Belfast.
The dining room was full, with about 550 guests. The host was Jonathan Hegan, Chairman of ICE NI, and a past Chairman of the Engineers Ireland NI Region.
The guest of honour was the Rt. Hon. The Lord Major, Councillor Naomi Long, who is herself a civil engineer before entering politics about six years ago. She spoke passionately about the role engineers and engineering is increasingly playing in national politics and policy.
The second guest of honour was Prof. Paul Jowitt, who is the current President of the ICE. Paul spoke about a renaissance of civil engineering, to tackle the twin issues of climate change and third world infrastructure.
A very pleasant evening!
