At the kind invitation of the Army Engineering Corps, I attended their annual dinner at Cathal Brugha Barracks this evening. Also in attendance were Major-General Ashe, Brigadier-General Paul Pakenham, and Director of Engineering Colonel Jim Foley.
There are currently 57 Engineering Officers, male and female, in the Corps, with a number currently on duty in Kosovo and Chad. There about 400 members of the Corps in all. The Army Corps of Engineering is responsible for all army combat engineering, but also all general engineering across the defence forces, including maintenance of buildings.
The evening was also attended by retired Officers. There were many reminiscences and stories about tours of duty and various engineering projects. I sensed a wonderful esprit de corps, and despite talk of the McCarthy report and Government cutbacks, the enthusiasm and professionalism was contagious. A wonderful evening.
