I had the honour yesterday of representing Engineers Ireland, and speaking, at the launch of the InterTradeIreland Innovation Connections Programme, at the EU buildings in Dawson St, Dublin.
Also speaking were Minister Billy Kelleher; John Fitzgerald and Aidan Gough from InterTradeIreland; Sean McNulty of Innovator; and Sadhbh McCarthy of the Centre for Irish and European Security. About 70 people attended.
The general aim of the programme is to identify a reasonable number of specific unmet issues in the general market of civilian security; and then to bring these to SMEs operating anywhere within the island of Ireland with a view to them developing innovative solutions for the particular market opportunities.
During my own talk, I mentioned the Criminal Assets Bureau as an outstanding example of innovation in civilian security in Ireland, which has become a model which other jurisdictions have followed and adopted. The technology underlying the CAB system is from an Irish SME.
